Türkçe metinler için yazarın 1947 yılında gözden geçirdiği baskı esas alınmıştır.Refik Halid'in anlattığı olaylar bütünüyle yaşadığı dönemin olaylarıdır. Memleket Hikayeleri ile Gurbet Hikayeleri'nde canlandırılan kişilerin çoğu adeta canlıdır. Bütün bu yönleriyle Halide Edip onun 'yalnız Türk edebiyatının değil, Rus ve Amerikan edebiyatlarından sonra, hikayecilikte cihan ölçüsünde ön planda bir yer işgal edebilecek bir hikayecimiz' olduğunu belirtir.
